cut

by:Sylvia Plath

The poem 'cut'  by Sylvia Plath is about a lady who accidentally cuts her thumb while chopping onions.
She gets a thrill from the experience. she thinks about all the blood running out of her finger. It doesn't take long after that for her to feel happy.
unfortunately her happy mood doesn't last long. about half way through poem, her mood changes, getting worse with bad ideas. It doesn't take long to realize that this lady is a bit crazy and strange.

The writer has showed some strange techniques in this poem. She has weird ways of describing the events that take place in this poem such as 'out of a gap, a million soldiers run out of her thumb' which represents her blood pouring out of her thumb and 'kamikaze man' to show that she has inflicted pain to herself. She has used a reasonable amount of similes and metaphors.'A flap like a hat'. She also uses very descriptive and effective words.

At the start, her mood is thrilled, surprised and a bit scared as she thinks about it. ''The Indians axed your scalp'. As she passes the shock of being cut, she feels happy and cheerful.'clutching a bottle of pink fizz, a celebration this is'. Her mood then changes completely. From thrilled to happy and now to self hat. For the rest of the poem, she continues to self hate. ''Trepanned veteran, dirty girl'.

I think that 'cut'; was an interesting poem with a lot of strange techniques and words. Its amusing to see how she uses words to refer to something else. I think that it was well written and effective but for me thee were too many similes and metaphors. It was to strange for me.
