“Tangi” by: Hone Tuwhare

This essay is on a poem, “Tangi”, written by a New Zealander, Hone Tuawhare. The main idea this poem is how different cultures deal with death and grief. The two language features of negatives and the contrast between the funerals. The author has chosen to use negatives mainly to help you to find the main idea and create a mood. You will see how hone tuwhare felt at each funeral.

The important idea in this poem is how different cultures deal with death and grief.one of the ways the author has used to create a mood and show how Hone Tuwhare feels is negatives. The author has uses negatives “nor” and “not”. The negatives a sad mood which I’m sure the author was looking for because it’s a European funeral. “Violets and carnations” indicate to you that it’s a European funeral because carnations and violets are found in England. You can tell that Hone Tuwhare is not comfortable at the European funeral from the use of negatives.

The author also uses the contrast of the two funerals to show the main idea of how different cultures deal with death. “Green leaved garnish” which is a hat made out of leaves which the Māori people wear at funerals (Tangi’s). This shows you that this is indeed a Māori funeral. He has used quotes. “Bowed heads of old women”. The Māori women would all sit with there heads bowed down. “Caught her beauty in the wind” is one of the few quotes which show that the author is more comfortable at a Maori funeral. At the start of the poem, it is describing the European funeral. Hone Tuwhare doesn’t feel as comfortable here as the Māori one if not comfortable at all. “I did not meet her on the bordered path nor detect her fragrance”. He doesn’t quite fit in with a different cultures way of dealing with stuff. In this case a funeral. The contrast has created two different moods in this poem.

In conclusion I think the author has put negatives and the contrast between the funerals to create a mood of how he’s feeling and to give you an image and understanding of the two funerals. The use of negatives is a great technique to use for a funeral. It’s a negative mood which is what a funeral scenario is like at the European funeral. As the story go on about the Maori funeral the mood changes. Overall I think the author has used good techniques and used them very wisely.
